Chargeable weight is the figure a carrier actually bills on: the highest of the gross weight, the volumetric weight and the loading-metre equivalence, so that light bulky freight pays for the space it occupies.
Overview
A truck runs out of floor before it runs out of payload. That single fact is why no European groupage tariff bills on gross weight alone: 400 kg of insulation panels filling four pallet spaces costs the carrier the same capacity as 3,000 kg of tiles on the same footprint.
The tariff therefore states one or more floors, each converting volume or floor space into a kilogramme figure. The engine computes every applicable floor, takes the highest, and reads the rate grid at that weight. A 250 kg shipment measuring 3 m³ under a tariff stating 1 m³ = 250 kg is billed at 750 kg, not 250 kg.

How is chargeable weight calculated?
Compute the gross weight, the volumetric weight and the loading-metre equivalence, then bill on the highest of the three. A 300 kg pallet occupying 0.4 LDM under a tariff of 1,750 kg per LDM is billed at 700 kg, because 0.4 x 1,750 beats 300 kg.

What is the difference between gross weight and chargeable weight?
Gross weight is what the scale reads, packaging and pallet included. Chargeable weight is what the tariff bills on. They are equal only for dense freight; for anything lighter than the tariff ratio, chargeable weight is higher and gross weight predicts nothing.
Confusing the two is the most common reason a quote and an invoice disagree. A shipper reads a scale, a carrier reads a tariff, and both are correct about different numbers.
- Gross weight — physical mass, goods plus packaging plus pallet. Used for vehicle payload and axle compliance.
- Net weight — goods only. Used for customs and product documentation, never for freight pricing.
- Chargeable weight — the billing figure. Used to select the weight bracket in the rate grid.
Density is the switch. Divide the gross weight by the volume: above the tariff ratio the freight is dense and pays on gross weight; below it, the volume wins. At 250 kg/m³, a 1,000 kg shipment is dense up to 4 m³ and volumetric beyond it. In a TMS for freight brokers, that threshold is not a judgement call — it falls out of the ratio on the grid.
Which floor applies, volumetric weight or loading metres?
Volumetric weight and the loading-metre equivalent are both computed, and the higher one wins. Volumetric weight reflects cube and matters for stackable freight; loading-metre equivalence reflects floor space and matters for non-stackable or long freight, where height is wasted and only the footprint is consumed.

Stackability decides which one bites. A pallet declared stackable lets the carrier sell the space above it, so cube is the fair measure. Declared non-stackable, the same pallet blocks the full column and the floor space becomes the scarce resource — which is exactly the case an mpl_bracket grid is built for.
How does a TMS apply chargeable weight to a rate grid?
The engine derives chargeable weight from the shipment, applies the paying-for rule, then reads the bracket. Cargavo runs this once per quote and reuses the result for both the buy rate and the sell rate, so purchase and sale can never disagree on the weight.
Two implementations of the same calculation drift apart within months — one gets a fix the other does not. Frequently asked questions
Is chargeable weight always higher than gross weight?
No. For dense freight the gross weight is the highest of the three measures and becomes the chargeable weight. The floors only bite when the shipment is lighter than the ratio stated in the tariff.
Who decides the conversion ratio?
The carrier does, in its tariff. Ratios differ between carriers and between services, which is why the ratio belongs on the rate grid rather than in a global setting.
Does chargeable weight apply to full truckload?
Rarely. Full truckload is priced per trip, so the constraint is the legal payload and the trailer dimensions rather than a chargeable-weight conversion.
Does Cargavo compute chargeable weight automatically?
