  1. 01 Pick the vehicle or enter inside dimensions Choose a preset (13.60 m trailer, rigid truck, 12 t truck, van, 20 ft or 40 ft container) or enter inside length, width and height in metres. Replace the payload with your own vehicle plate value.

Limits — what this calculator does not do

  • It is a geometric model: axis-aligned pallets in at most two orientation blocks. Dock crews use pinwheel patterns that can add a pallet or two, especially in containers.
  • It ignores axle-load distribution, securing, strapping and every loading-safety rule — a plan that fits on paper can still be refused at the dock.
  • Multi-drop trips are loaded in reverse delivery order, which costs floor spots the calculator does not deduct.
  • Tail-lift operation, rear loading and pallet-truck manoeuvring room can condemn the last row.
  • No carrier tariff is included: this is a capacity tool, not a price tool.

How many pallets fit in a truck?

A standard 13.60 m tautliner with a 2.45 m inside width holds 33 EUR pallets three across (11 rows of 3) or 34 two across (17 rows of 2); a 12 m 40 ft container holds around 24 to 25, depending on the pattern used.

The famous "33 or 34" is not a contradiction: it is two loading patterns. A 1.20 m × 0.80 m EUR pallet can be placed with its long side along the trailer or across it, and the floor takes a different number each way.

Three EUR pallets side by side need 2.40 m of clear width, so they fit a 2.45 m tautliner but not a 2.35 m container — which is exactly why containers switch to the two-across pattern. Stacking a second level doubles these numbers when the freight, the roof height and the carrier all allow it. How do you calculate the number of pallets in a truck?

Count how many pallets fit across the inside width, multiply by how many rows fit along the inside length, do it for both orientations, keep the best — then cap the result by roof height, by stacking levels and by payload.

For a pallet measuring L × W and a vehicle measuring Lc × Wc:

  • Orientation A: across = floor(Wc ÷ W), rows = floor(Lc ÷ L), spots = across × rows
  • Orientation B: across = floor(Wc ÷ L), rows = floor(Lc ÷ W), spots = across × rows
  • Floor spots = the best of the two, or of the best mixed block pattern
  • Levels = min(levels allowed, floor(inside height ÷ loaded height))
  • Total = min(floor spots × levels, floor(payload ÷ weight per pallet))

Worked example on a 13.60 × 2.45 m trailer with EUR pallets:

  • Orientation A: floor(2.45 ÷ 0.80) = 3 across, floor(13.60 ÷ 1.20) = 11 rows → 33 pallets, using 13.20 m of floor
  • Orientation B: floor(2.45 ÷ 1.20) = 2 across, floor(13.60 ÷ 0.80) = 17 rows → 34 pallets, using the full 13.60 m
  • At 700 kg per pallet and a 24 000 kg payload, the weight ceiling is floor(24 000 ÷ 700) = 34 pallets — exactly at the limit
  • At 900 kg per pallet, the ceiling drops to 26 and payload becomes the limiting factor, not floor space

The loading metres consumed follow directly: 33 EUR pallets × 0.40 LDM = 13.20 LDM, which is why a full trailer is quoted at 13.60 LDM and not at "34 LDM".

Why is the theoretical maximum rarely loaded?

Because axle-load limits, space for securing and strapping, delivery order on multi-drop trips, tail-lift access and pallet overhang all consume capacity that a purely geometric calculation cannot see, the number actually loaded is almost always below the theoretical maximum the calculator returns.

The number this calculator returns is a ceiling, not a plan. Five things eat into it in the real world:

Stacking deserves its own warning: two levels are a commercial agreement about the goods, not just a question of roof height. Freight declared stackable and refused at the dock is re-measured flat, which doubles the floor it occupies — and doubles what you are billed. How does a pallet count become a freight price?

A pallet count reads a per-pallet rate grid: the price is set by the number of pallets and the destination zone, then fuel surcharge, options and your margin turn that buy price into a sell price.

Palletized networks often price by the pallet rather than by the kilogram: 1 pallet to zone 3 costs X, 2 pallets cost Y, and so on. That is exactly the pallet grid type in Cargavo, a TMS for freight brokers and forwarders. Why do three EUR pallets fit across a trailer but not a container?

Three pallets side by side need 3 × 0.80 = 2.40 m of clear width. A tautliner offers 2.44 to 2.48 m, so they fit; a container offers about 2.35 m, so they do not.

Does stacking double the number of pallets in a truck?

Only if three conditions hold at once: the loaded height fits twice under the roof, the bottom pallet can carry the top one, and the carrier accepts stacking for that freight. Any one of them missing and you are back to a single layer.

What limits a load first, floor space or weight?

It depends on density. Light pallets fill the floor before the payload; heavy pallets hit the payload first. The calculator names the limiting factor explicitly for the figures you enter.
