How to use this calculator

Limits — what this calculator does not do

  • It contains no carrier tariff and returns no price: chargeable weight is an input to a rate grid, not a rate.
  • Re-weighing and re-measuring at the hub is contractually decisive with most groupage carriers — this result is a good-faith estimate, not a commitment from the carrier.
  • Minimum charges per shipment or per zone are applied after this calculation and can override it entirely on small consignments.
  • The volumetric ratio and the kg-per-LDM ratio are negotiated values, never standards: this tool asks for them instead of assuming them.

DIM divisors are the same ratio written differently: kg per m³ = 1,000,000 ÷ divisor — 3000 gives 333 kg/m³, 4000 gives 250 kg/m³, 5000 gives 200 kg/m³.

Volume, loading metres or the highest of the three: which rule applies?

Some carriers convert volume only, some apply a loading-metre floor only, most keep the highest of the three — and below the density where the ratio bites, it is the space that pays, not the kilograms.

There is no universal rule, which is why this calculator makes you choose one:

The tipping density is simply the ratio itself. At 250 kg/m³, freight denser than 250 kg/m³ pays on its actual weight; anything lighter pays on volume. The same shipment can be under the tipping point for one carrier and over it for another purely because one uses a divisor of 3000 and the other 5000.

Stackability moves more money than the ratio. Declared non-stackable, the loading-metre floor usually takes over — which is the single most common reason an invoice exceeds the quote; the glossary sets out which floor applies. How does chargeable weight become a freight price?

Chargeable weight selects a bracket in a weight-zone or hybrid rate grid for the destination zone; the fuel surcharge and options are added, and a margin turns that buy price into the customer sell price.

Chargeable weight is the number that reads the grid. Once you have it, the price follows in four steps: find the bracket for the destination zone, test whether paying for the next bracket's threshold is cheaper, add the indexed fuel surcharge and the options (tail lift, ADR, ad valorem insurance, delivery appointment), then apply the margin.

Frequently asked questions

How many kilograms is 1 m³ in road freight?

It depends on the ratio in your tariff. A DIM divisor of 3000 makes 1 m³ equal 333 kg, a divisor of 4000 makes it 250 kg, and a divisor of 5000 makes it 200 kg. There is no single legal value, so always read the ratio from the carrier contract.

What is the difference between volumetric weight and chargeable weight?

Volumetric weight is one candidate: volume multiplied by a kg-per-m³ ratio. Chargeable weight is the figure actually billed, which is the highest of actual weight, volumetric weight and loading-metre weight under the rule in your tariff.

Why did my carrier invoice more kilograms than I declared?

Usually because the freight was re-measured at the hub and turned out to be non-stackable, which switches the calculation to the loading-metre floor, or because a minimum charge applied. Re-weighing at the hub is contractually decisive with most groupage carriers.

Does non-stackable freight change the chargeable weight?

Yes, and often dramatically. Non-stackable freight occupies twice the floor, so the loading-metre weight doubles and typically becomes the ruling figure — the calculator shows you which rule wins for your shipment.

Is 333 kg per m³ the standard volumetric ratio?

No. Around 333 kg/m³ is common in international road groupage, but 250 to 270 kg/m³ are frequent domestically. This calculator asks for the ratio rather than imposing one.
