AscendTMS alternative for European freight brokers

AscendTMS publishes $69, $119 and $149 per user per month. Cargavo is a TMS for freight brokers at 49 €, 149 € and 399 € per month for the whole organization. At six people on the top tier, that is roughly $894/month against 149 €/month — the same product decision, priced on two different axes.

What each product actually is

AscendTMS is a low-cost, per-user TMS marketed to US freight brokers, carriers, 3PLs and shippers under the tagline “The ‘Don’t Pay Us’ TMS”. Cargavo is a TMS for freight brokers that rebuilds your negotiated carrier rate grids and returns both a purchase price and a customer-facing sell price with your margin applied server-side.

Short verdict

AscendTMS is genuinely generous: free setup, support and training forever, no contracts, no charge for drivers, trucks or loads, a 30-day free trial on Premium and Pro, and 140+ integrations. Nothing on this page disputes that. The reason to look elsewhere is not the price tag but the shape of the bill and the shape of the market: cost scales with every person you hire, the product is US-centric, and the buy-price / sell-price mechanic that defines brokerage in Europe is not what it is built around.

“Not stated” means we could not find the information on their public site on that date. It does not mean the capability is missing.

How much does AscendTMS cost for a 6-person brokerage?

AscendTMS publishes $69 (Basic), $119 (Premium) and $149 (Pro) per user per month. Six people on Pro is roughly $894 per month. Cargavo publishes 49 €, 149 € and 399 € per month for the whole organization, so the sixth hire costs nothing extra inside a plan.

Per-seat and per-organization pricing diverge slowly, then all at once. The arithmetic below uses AscendTMS’s own published per-user rates and Cargavo’s own published plans — no discounts, no assumptions.

Team sizeAscendTMS Pro ($149/user)Cargavo
2 people$298/month49 €/month (Starter, 3 members)
6 people$894/month149 €/month (Growth, 10 members)
12 people$1,788/month399 €/month (Scale, 30 members)

Two caveats, in fairness. First, AscendTMS Basic at $69 per user is materially cheaper per seat than Pro and carries “over 230 standard features”, so a small team on Basic is not paying $894. Second, their own homepage states “Pricing plans start at zero dollars” while the pricing page lists $69 as the lowest tier — we report the discrepancy neutrally and recommend confirming current terms with them directly.

Cargavo bills annually at 490 €, 1,490 € and 3,990 €, and meters quotes per month rather than people: 200, 1,500 and 10,000 respectively.

What is the difference between AscendTMS and Cargavo?

AscendTMS centres on load booking, carrier vetting and dispatch. Cargavo is a TMS for freight brokers centred on turning a negotiated rate grid into two numbers: the purchase price you pay the carrier, and the sell price your customer sees with your margin already inside it.

Both are called a TMS, and they solve different halves of the job. AscendTMS’s centre of gravity is moving the load: booking, carrier vetting, dispatch, documents, e-signature, EDI in the higher tiers, and 140+ integrations including DAT and Uber Freight.

Cargavo is a TMS for freight brokers whose centre of gravity is the price. You rebuild the carrier grid you negotiated — Excel or CSV — in one of four road models: weight_zone, pallet, mpl_bracket (linear metre / LDM) or hybrid_weight. Taxable weight applies an LDM floor and a configurable volumetric ratio; rounding is configurable; a fuel surcharge can be indexed; options cover tail lift, ADR, ad valorem insurance and appointment booking.

The same engine then runs twice. Once without margins, for the purchase price. Once with the margin rule configured for that customer — percent, computed as p/(1-m), or absolute per bracket — for the sell price. Margins are applied server-side and the financials live in a private record: a customer logged into the portal can read their quote Q-YYYY-NNNN and their shipment S-YYYY-NNNN, and cannot read your purchase price or your margin under any circumstances.

Does AscendTMS work for a European road freight broker?

AscendTMS publishes USD pricing, US and cross-border North American coverage and US load-board integrations, with no EUR or multi-currency billing and no French, Spanish or German interface stated on its site. Cargavo runs in en, fr, es and de and bills in seven currencies.

Nothing on the AscendTMS site suggests it is trying to be a European product, and that is a reasonable choice for them rather than a flaw. What it means for you is concrete:

  • Currency — AscendTMS publishes in USD. Cargavo bills in EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, CAD, MAD and PLN, and every amount is stored with its currency rather than converted for display.
  • Language — no French, Spanish or German interface is stated on their site. Cargavo runs in English, French, Spanish and German, including the customer portal your clients log into.
  • Grid shapes — European road tariffs come as zone × weight bracket, price per pallet count, LDM brackets, or a flat rate below a threshold. Cargavo names those four models explicitly; the AscendTMS site does not describe them.
  • Coverage — their site describes US, Mexico and Canada cross-border operations and US load boards.

If you broker North American freight in dollars, none of the above is an argument against AscendTMS. If you broker intra-European road freight in euros, all four are.

Which one should a small European broker choose?

Choose AscendTMS for North American dispatch, load booking, carrier vetting and EDI, especially with a small headcount. Choose Cargavo to price European road freight from your own grids, apply per-customer margins and give your clients a branded portal — for 49-399 € per month whatever the team size.

A short decision rule, without adjectives:

  • Fewer than three people, US freight, live load boards → AscendTMS. Per-seat pricing is cheap at that size and the integrations are real.
  • Growing team, European road freight, negotiated grids → Cargavo. Flat per-organization pricing, four road grid models, seven currencies, four languages.
  • You need EDI to trade at all → AscendTMS. Cargavo has none and will not pretend otherwise.
  • Your customers keep emailing for prices → Cargavo. The branded portal lets them simulate a price themselves, request a quote even when no grid matches the lane, book, follow the shipment and message in context.

Cargavo is a TMS for freight brokers — it is not a dispatch system, not a fleet tool and not a load board, and it will not replace those parts of AscendTMS.

When the other product is the better choice

When is AscendTMS the better choice?

Choose AscendTMS if you operate in North America, need EDI or 140+ integrations, run a team of one or two where per-seat pricing is cheapest, or want a 30-day trial and a vendor that charges nothing for setup, support or training, ever.

AscendTMS is the better product for you if any of these is true:

  • You work North American freight — US domestic or US/Mexico/Canada cross-border.
  • You need EDI or specific integrations such as DAT or Uber Freight.
  • You are one or two people: at that size per-seat pricing is the cheaper structure, and Basic at $69 per user is hard to beat.
  • You want a 30-day trial rather than 14 days, with no credit card.
  • You value a vendor that publishes “Setup, Support & Training Free (Forever)” and “No set-up fees. No contract periods ever”, and never meters drivers, trucks or loads.

Those are real commitments, published on their own site, and they are the right reasons to pick AscendTMS over anything else — including us.

What Cargavo does not do

  • No carrier API and no EDI connection. Carriers are onboarded by rebuilding their rate grid in a structured grid builder.
  • Not a freight exchange. Cargavo does not find you a truck and holds no load board.
  • No fleet management: no driver app, no vehicle planning, no eCMR, no telematics.
  • No warehouse management and no customs filing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does AscendTMS cost per user?

AscendTMS publishes three per-user tiers on its pricing page: Basic at $69 per user per month with over 230 standard features, Premium at $119 per user per month with 33 premium features and the first 30 days free, and Pro at $149 per user per month with all 230 standard plus 93 premium features. Verified 23 July 2026.

Is AscendTMS really free?

Their homepage states “Pricing plans start at zero dollars” while their pricing page lists $69 per user per month as the lowest tier, as of 23 July 2026. We report both statements without interpreting them and suggest confirming current terms directly with AscendTMS. Premium and Pro do include a stated 30-day free trial with no credit card.

What is cheaper than AscendTMS for a growing brokerage?

Because AscendTMS bills per user, the comparison depends on headcount. At six people on Pro the published rate works out to roughly $894 per month. Cargavo bills per organization: 49 €/month up to 3 members, 149 €/month up to 10 and 399 €/month up to 30, so the sixth and seventh hire cost nothing extra inside a plan.

Does Cargavo have EDI like AscendTMS?

No. Cargavo has no EDI and no carrier API. Carriers are onboarded by rebuilding their negotiated rate grid from their Excel or CSV sheet in a structured grid builder in one of four models: weight_zone, pallet, mpl_bracket or hybrid_weight. AscendTMS includes EDI in its higher tiers, and if EDI is a requirement for you, that is a decisive advantage in its favour.
